News from University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine, Department of Oral Medicine

The Oral Medicine Residency Program at the University of Pennsylvania is an intensive training program, with clinical training based at the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Medicine at Radnor), and the School of Dental Medicine. The program culminates in a certificate of completion, with options to pursue a Master of Science in Oral Biology (MSOB) degree or a Doctor of Science (DScD) degree from the School of Dental Medicine. The Department of Oral Medicine is led by Chair, Dr. Thomas Sollecito, with faculty Dr. Eric Stoopler, Dr. Sunday Akintoye, Dr. Takako Tanaka, Dr. Arthur Kuperstein, Dr. Mel Mupparapu, Dr. Scott Odell, Dr. Farideh Madani, and Dr. Thomas Berardi.

Please join us in saying farewell to Dr. Martin Greenberg, who retired from the faculty of Penn Dental Medicine. A reception was held in his honor at Penn in June 2016 and The Martin S. Greenberg, D.D.S. Teaching Award in Oral Medicine, presented to the faculty member who demonstrates excellence in resident teaching, was established in recognition of his educational contributions to the residency program. The inaugural recipient of this was award was Dr. Eric Stoopler, Program Director of the residency. Congratulations to Dr. Scott Odell, who was the recipient of this year’s Senior Outstanding Teaching Award, presented by the Penn Dental Medicine Class of 2016. Dr. Eric Stoopler will continue to serve as Vice-President of AAOM, while Dr. Thomas Sollecito will serve as the Treasurer and Director for the American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM) for the upcoming year.

We would like to welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Takako Tanaka, to the department. Dr. Tanaka completed the oral medicine residency program at Penn and was previously on faculty at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Sunday Akintoye is currently at the University of Lagos Dental School in Nigeria as a Fulbright Scholar and will return to Penn Dental Medicine in the fall of 2016.

Congratulations to this summer’s graduates, Dr. Milda Chmieliauskaite, Dr. Sophia Elmuradi, Dr. Sausan Alfaris,and Dr. Ashwag Aloyouny. Dr. Chmieliauskaite was the recipient of the 2016 Robert Schattner Award for Outstanding Oral Medicine Resident from Penn Dental Medicine and graduated from the certificate program. Dr. Elmuradi, Dr. Alfaris,and Dr. Aloyouny obtained their certificates with Dr. Alfaris continuing at Penn Dental Medicine in the DScD program. Dr. Sahar Mirfarsi is in her final year of residency (certificate) and has assumed the role of Chief Resident. Dr. David Ojeda and Dr. Lujain Homeida are also entering the final year of the residency (certificate) with Dr. Alomar pursuing a certificate/MSOB degree. We also welcomed this summer our incoming residents, Dr. Katherine France pursuing a certificate in oral medicine, Dr. Anwar AlMuzaini entering the combined certificate/MSOB program and Dr. Chalatip Chompunud Na Ayudhya entering the combined certificate/DScD program. Congratulations to Dr. May Alsenani and Dr. Lujain AlHuwayrini for completing the MSOB program this spring. Dr. Temitope Omolehinwa is entering the final year of the DScD program, with Dr. Sunday Akintoye serving as her mentor.
