  1. Understand the current definitions, nomenclature, and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs).

  2. Realize the natural history and clinical/histopathologic evolution of OPMDs and risk for cancer development.
  3. Appreciate the steps taken to assess, diagnose and manage patients with OPMDs.

Ross Kerr Headshot

Ross Kerr, DDS, MSD

Dr. A. Ross Kerr is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at New York University College of Dentistry. He is a past chair of the AAOM Oral Cancer Task Force, and sits on the scientific advisory board of the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Katherine France, DMD, MBE
University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Katherine France is an Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine at Penn Dental Medicine. She obtained both her DMD and Master of Bioethics (MBE) from the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her Residency in Oral Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, serving as the chief resident during her second year. Upon completion of her residency program, Dr. France received the Robert Schattner Award for Outstanding Oral Medicine Resident, in honor of her achievements and contributions to the department. Dr. France currently teaches clinically in the Oral Medicine and Medically Complex Clinics in the School of Dental Medicine and didactically on a wide range of subjects relating to oral medicine, ethics and professionalism, and patient management. Her scholarly work also focuses on both oral medicine and questions of ethics in education and patient care. In addition to her faculty responsibilities, Dr. France also serves as an attending dentist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and treats general dentistry, medically complex, orofacial pain, salivary gland and oral mucosal lesion patients at the Penn Dental Family Practice at University City.

Alessandro Villa Headshot

Alessandro Villa, DDS, PhD, MPH

Dr. Alessandro Villa is the chief of the Sol Silverman Oral Medicine Clinic at UCSF and the Director of Oral Oncology.  Dr. Villa obtained his dental degree and PhD from Italy and his Master of Public Health from AT Still University, MO. He then completed his oral medicine residency training at Harvard University/Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute.  Dr. Villa's research interests include the pathobiology of oral complications from cancer treatment therapeutic strategies for oral leukoplakia. In addition, Dr. Villa is working to reduce the burden of HPV associated oropharyngeal cancers. He serves on the editorial board of several oral medicine journals, including Oral Diseases.
