In recent years, there have been remarkable advances in the treatment of cancer. This talk will focus on the principles of diagnosis and management of cancer patients with an emphasis on clinical research in oncology.

  1. Understand the fundamental principles of imaging in patients with head and neck cancers
  2. Become familiar with the radiographic interpretation of advanced imaging studies
  3. Understand how to interpret the radiology report

This talk summarizes the fundamental principles of imaging in patients with head and neck cancers.

Radiation oncology for head and neck cancers

  1. Understand the basics of radiation oncology for patients with head and neck cancers
  2. Become familiar with the radiation treatment protocols for head and neck cancers
  3. Understand the indications and limitations of radiation oncology for patients with head and neck cancers

Participants will learn about the most up to date radiation treatment guidelines and strategies for the management of head and neck cancers patients as well as understand the limitations of radiation oncology. 

 

Session 2 – Patient Evaluation and Risk Assessment

The conventional oral examination remains an essential screening tool for the detection of oral cancer and precancers. This talk provides an in-depth overview of the conduct of a thorough oral examination with emphasis on the generation of an appropriate differential diagnosis.

Dental management principles (pre-during-post)

  1. Become familiar with the current protocols for the dental management of patients undergoing cancer treatment
  2. Understand the role of the dental professional during cancer treatment
  3. Understand the rationale for dental management of patients who underwent cancer therapy

Participants will become familiar with current protocols for the dental management of patients undergoing cancer treatment with an emphasis on the role of the dental professional during and after cancer therapy.

 

Session 3 – Clinical Oral Oncology

This lecture will provide a general overview of oral leukoplakia and the current challenges in its diagnosis and treatment.  

11:30 – 12:00 pm Complications from head and neck radiation therapy
  1. Recognize early and late oral complications from head and neck radiotherapy
  2. Become familiar with the current management strategies for oral complications secondary to head and neck radiation therapy

Herve Sroussi, DDS, PhD

Participants will learn about complications related to the treatment of head and neck cancers, and strategies for both prevention and management.

12:00 – 12:30 pm Acute oral toxicities in cancer therapy (Chemotherapy + targeted therapy)
  1. Recognize the acute oral toxicities from cancer therapy
  2. Become familiar with the new agents responsible for acute oral complications in cancer patients
  3. Understand the current management strategies for patients with acute oral toxicities secondary to chemotherapy

Steven Sonis, DMD, DMSc

This talk will provide a detailed summary of acute oral toxicities in cancer therapy, including epidemiology and clinical features as well as their potential impact on delivery of care and outcomes.

12:30 – 1:30 pm

1:30 – 2:00 pm Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw
  1. Become familiar with the risk factors for MRONJ
  2. Recognize the clinical and radiographic changes of MRONJ
  3. Understand the current treatment options available for patients with MRONJ

Sook Bin Woo, DMD, MSc

Participants will learn the fundamentals of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, including epidemiology, risk factors, clinical features, and management approaches.

2:00 – 2:30 pm Oral chronic graft-versus-host disease
  1. Become familiar with the clinical presentation of oral GVHD
  2. Understand the principles of management of oral GVHD
  3. Recognize the oral complications associated with oral GVHD

Nathaniel Treister, DMD, DMSc

This talk will provide an in-depth overview of the oral features of chronic graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, including management strategies and long-term follow-up guidelines.

 

Session 4 – Interprofessional Oral Oncology

Participants will gain an appreciation and understanding of the important role of mid-level providers in management of cancer patients and coordination of their care.

3:20 – 3:50 pm Multidisciplinary cases
  1. Develop an appreciation for the importance of interdisciplinary care for the diagnosis and management of oral complications in cancer patients
  2. Understand how to generate an appropriate differential and working diagnosis
  3. Highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment planning, patient education and counseling, and monitoring and follow-up
