Application Process

Academic Fellowship

To sit for the Academic Fellowship Exam, you must apply prior to the deadlines having met all the qualifications. Applications and payment of $300 USD must be received by the Academy office thirty days prior to the Annual Conference. Applications will not be accepted after this deadline.

Those who wish to pursue the Academic Fellowship credential from AAOM must demonstrate their qualifications by:

  • Maintaining a Regular Membership in the American Academy of Oral Medicine for at least one year prior to sitting for the examination.
  • Attending at least two annual meetings over the course of two years, one of which may be the year the examination is taken.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in oral medicine through teaching oral medicine, a residency program, hospital affiliation, oral medicine publications, and continuing education courses in oral medicine (these may be obtained during AAOM meetings).
  • Submitting their application form and a curriculum vitae that provide documentation of the above. The application should be submitted by March 17, 2025.
  • Successfully completing a written multiple-choice and essay examination, given each year at the annual meeting.

Applications for the Fellowship Exam are being accepted now. The next exam administration will be held during the 2025 Annual Meeting, May 12-17, 2025 in Las Vegas, NV. Details on the exam date and time will be available soon.

All applications are reviewed by the chair and co/chair of the Academic Affiliate Fellowship Committee before accepting the application with a request to sit for the exam at the annual meeting. We review the application based on the established criteria listed to determine their acceptance.

If an applicant is not considered qualified to site for the exam at that time, the payment of $300 will be returned to the applicant. Once accepted, the exam is administered and graded by the chairs of the committee. The members will be notified by mail or shortly after the the exam is fully processed. The certificate of Affiliate Fellowship is presented at the following annual meeting to the members. The exam is multiple choice and will involve some case study identifications. The exam is hand-graded but may become electronic as numbers increase. A grade of 70 is considered passing.

Academic Affiliate Fellowship

Those who wish to pursue the Academic Affiliate Fellowship credential from AAOM must demonstrate their qualifications by:

  • Maintaining an Affiliate Membership in the American Academy of Oral Medicine for at least one year prior to sitting for the examination.
  • Attending at least two annual meetings over the course of two years, one of which may be the year the examination is taken.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in oral medicine through teaching oral medicine, a residency program, hospital affiliation, oral medicine publications, and continuing education courses in oral medicine (these may be obtained during AAOM meetings).
  • Submitting their application form and a curriculum vitae that provide documentation of the above.
  • Successfully completing a written multiple-choice and essay examination, given each year at the annual meeting.

Applications for the Affiliate Fellowship Exam must be submitted by Monday, March 3, 2025 to be considered for the 2025 exam.
