Debunking Myths in the Diagnosis and Management of Temporomandibular Disorders – Part I
This lecture will review common questions and myths that have perpetuated the field of orofacial pain and complicated the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Attendees will learn the standards of examination set by the American Academy of Orofacial Pain for patients presenting with jaw pain, including when to order imaging and the role of adjunctive tests. The long-controversial role of occlusion as a cause of TMD will be discussed, with an appraisal of the literature and the presentation of real-life clinical cases of patients with malocclusion and TMD. Lastly, the evidence and indications for occlusal appliances of different styles will be reviewed.
