IN YOUR FACE ORAL MEDICINEExpert Advice for Care of Your Patients Saturday November 4, 2017 Jointly provided by the UNC Department of Dental Ecology and The American Academy of Oral Medicine Course Description: This course will provide the attendee with practical advice from a panel of nationally known Oral Medicine experts on how to better manage their patients with complex medical conditions, oral mucosal diseases, and orofacial pain. Take-home tips, prescriptions, reference guidelines, and relevant websites will be provided. Clinical cases will be presented. The faculty invites attendees to submit their most perplexing cases for discussion by the experts in the final hour. Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: • Recognize the most common medications your patients are taking and how they impact their overall oral health and their treatment plan. • Determine what you need to ask patients to clarify their health status and ensure their medical conditions are being appropriately managed. • Develop a differential diagnosis for your patients with a complex oral-facial disease or health condition and determine when referral to a specialist might be prudent. • Prepare your oncology patients for cancer therapy and manage their acute and chronic health complications. • Effectively, evaluate and manage common oral mucosal diseases. • Examine the challenges and opportunities in managing orofacial pain conditions, including appropriate controlled-substance prescribing practices and recognizing the signs of abuse/misuse in your patients.
