Program Agenda / Webinar Description

Despite our best efforts as oral health specialists, management of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders, (OPMD) has not changed substantively in nearly 50 years. Understanding future malignant potential of OPMD is critical, unfortunately, histopathology lacks prognostic or predictive potential, especially in the 70% of cases diagnosed as “mild” dysplasia or “no” dysplasia by WHO criteria. This webinar will discuss limitations in histopathology and opportunities using biomarker-based diagnostic adjuncts to improve management of OPMD, and, ultimately, oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Including both histopathologic and clinical items for consideration. Diagnostic adjuncts which are commercially available will be discussed.

Objectives

After reviewing this course work the participants should be able to:

  1. Understand accepted theories governing the pathophysiology of oral carcinogenesis and malignant transformation of OPMD lesions.
  2. Outline histopathology as a tool for predicting future malignant transformation of OPMD lesions into oral squamous cell carcnoma.
  3. Discuss biomarker-based adjuncts to diagnose and manage OPMD based on risk of future malignant potential, as opposed to clinicopathologic risk factors alone.
