Dental Clearance Prior to Medical Therapy: Cardiovascular Surgery, Head and Neck Radiation, and Transplant

MEET THE EXPERTS

Synopsis
Dental Clearance prior to Cancer Therapy: Oral infection, related to dental and periodontal diseases, is a risk factor for bacteremia which may negatively impact systemic health in vulnerable patient populations. Dental consultations, and pre-operative dental stabilization, is sought prior to certain medical procedures to minimize this risk. This presentation will discuss the role of oral healthcare providers in pre-operative dental assessment, treatment planning, and delivery of care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe clinical circumstances in which dental consultation is indicated prior to medical therapy.
  2. Compare and contrast dental treatment planning considerations prior to cardiac surgery, organ transplant, and head and neck radiation.

Special Patient Care

MEET THE EXPERTS

Synopsis
Significant research supports the need for improvement in the oral care for adults with development and intellectual disabilities. Among myriad reasons of the current deficit in care, is the limited exposure of pre-doctoral dental students to the clinical care of patients with special needs. Furthermore, dental providers report lack of experience as one of the primary reasons for referring patients with special needs to hospital providers. This session focuses on the techniques necessary to adequately assess and treat the patient with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Learning Objectives - At the completion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of common intellectual disabilities on oral health.
  2. Determine appropriate behavior guidance techniques on a case dependent basis.
  3. Recognize adjunctive techniques and equipment that are helpful for patients with special needs.
  4. Discuss various treatment plans on a case dependent basis.

Non-Invasive Imaging in Oral Medicine: Current Perspectives

MEET THE EXPERTS

Synopsis
Diagnosis and management of inflammatory, autoimmune, malignant, and potentially malignant oral lesions represent significant challenges for the oral medicine specialist and the general dentist. Advanced non-invasive imaging technologies, including narrow-band imaging (NBI), high-frequency ultrasounds (US), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and in vivo confocal microscopy (RCM), can provide an aid to the clinician in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal diseases. Regarding OSCC, diagnostic timing is critical in reducing mortality, just as monitoring OPMDs to intercept any malignant transformation. The diagnostic gold standard remains biopsy with associated pathologic analysis; however, these tools could help the diagnostic pathway by providing real-time imaging in a non-invasive way. This presentation aims to illustrate the principal noninvasive diagnostic imaging technologies that can be used intraorally to diagnose and manage major oral mucosal diseases.

Learning Objectives

  1. Be familiar with the principal noninvasive diagnostic imaging technologies applied in the management of oral mucosa diseases.
  2. Be familiar with imaging findings of different devices in the common oral lesions.
  3. Understand the application of non-invasive imaging for the management of OPMD and OSCC.
