CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) and the European Association of Oral Medicine invite submissions for oral and poster presentations at the joint meeting, taking place from May 14-17, 2025. Abstracts should not be accepted for publication by a journal prior to the AAOM abstract submission deadline. Abstracts previously presented at other conferences within the past 12 months, but not yet published, are also eligible for submission.

The Abstracts Committee will review and select submissions for poster and oral presentations at the meeting. Abstracts accepted for oral presentation will be published in the Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology journal.

If you created or had a user account in ConfTool last year, your user account should stay the same. Please attempt to use the same username and password as last year. Please contact [email protected] if you have any problem logging in using your last year’s username and password.

Decisions will be communicated to corresponding authors through ConfTool by the end January 2025. All updates regarding the status of your abstract, whether accepted or rejected, will be provided exclusively via ConfTool.

Meeting registration will open in November 2024. If accepted, the presenting author must register for the meeting by the early bird deadline and attend the scheduled poster or oral session. Abstracts without a registered presenter by the deadline, or if the presenter is absent during the session, will be withdrawn and will not be eligible for publication in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology journal.

For international attendees:

Please check with the US embassy in your country concerning visa requirements and consider that there have been significant administrative delays and plan accordingly. Please remember that abstract acceptance communications will be delivered only via Conftool by the end of January 2025. The AAOM does not provide any travel stipends or administrative support for visa applications.


 

INSTRUCTIONS

There are four links on the abstracts submission page:

  • Lester Burket Memorial Award (LBMA) – restricted to US/Canadian-trained oral medicine residents/fellows
  • Trainee Case Report Award (TCRA) – restricted to trainees only (students, fellows and residents)
  • General Case Report (GCR)
  • Original Investigation (OI)

All abstracts must be submitted under one of the four categories. Please pay close attention to the submission categories. Submission to an incorrect category may result in rejection of the abstract.

All abstracts are limited to a maximum of 350 words. Tables and figures are not allowed for any abstract submission.

LBMA submissions should include two abstract versions, one limited to 350 words and another with a maximum of 750 words.

Submission information

  • Only one abstract per presenting author is eligible for acceptance, per category.
    • A presenting author cannot present multiple abstracts in the same category.
    • If an author submits more than one abstract as the presenting author, only the first submission will be reviewed.
  • The presenting author must be listed as a co-author in the original abstract submission.
    • Changes to the presenting author are not permitted if they were not originally listed as co-author.
  • Abstracts cannot be edited after the submission deadline.
    • The content of the accepted poster or presentation at the meeting must match the details of the originally submitted abstract.
    • No updates to results or findings are permitted.
  • There is a specific abstract format for each category detailed below. Any submission not following the format may be withdrawn from consideration.

General Case Report Abstract Format:

  1. Background (A few sentences providing information relevant to case)
  2. Case summary (chief complaint, other pertinent historical and examination data, diagnostic investigations, and results (laboratory, radiographic, etc.), and therapeutic or management strategies/outcomes)
  3. Conclusions (significance/relevance of case)

Original Investigation Abstract Format:

  1. Objectives (aims/purpose, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation)
  2. Methods (brief description of experimental procedures including statistics)
  3. Results (findings of statistical analysis)
  4. Conclusions (one or two major conclusions that are supported by results)

Trainee Case Report Abstract Format:

  1. Background (A few sentences providing information relevant to case)
  2. Case summary (chief complaint, other pertinent historical and examination data, diagnostic investigations, and results (laboratory, radiographic, etc.), and therapeutic or management strategies/outcomes)
  3. Conclusions (significance/relevance of case)

Lester Burket Memorial Award Format:

  1. Objectives: introduction that clearly indicates the purpose of the study, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation
  2. Methods: a description of the experimental procedures including statistical methods
  3. Results: findings of statistical analysis
  4. Conclusions: supported by results
  5. Funding sources including grant numbers

 

AWARDS

Case Report Awards (Trainee Award - Case report category)
The top five case report abstracts submitted by students, residents, or fellows will be selected for 8-minute oral presentations at the meeting. Each selected presenter will receive a monetary award. Judging will be based on the quality, clarity, and clinical significance of the abstract.

Lester Burket Memorial Award (US and Canadian Trainees ONLY)
The Lester Burket Memorial Award (LBMA) was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Lester Burket and to encourage both basic science and clinical research in oral medicine. This award is open to research conducted by residents and fellows from accredited Oral Medicine training programs in the U.S. and Canada. Eligible candidates include current residents/fellows and recent graduates (within one year) of these programs, provided the research was completed during their residency. A letter from the program director verifying the graduation date and the completion of the research during training must accompany the abstract submission. There is no limit to the number of candidates allowed per training program, and submitted abstracts should reflect significant, thesis-level research. A maximum of two awards are granted each year.

Award recipients will deliver a 20-minute oral presentation at the meeting. In addition to a monetary prize, awardees will receive a one-year AAOM membership and waived registration fees for the meeting.

Robert and Kay Schattner Award (Trainee Award – Original Investigation category – Oral Presentation)
The Robert and Kay Schattner Award will be presented to the best oral presentation of an abstract by a student, resident, or fellow. Judging for this prestigious award will take place during the meeting, with the winner receiving a monetary prize.

EAOM Young Investigator Award
The Young Investigator Award was created to recognize and celebrate emerging authors of exceptional ability who show promise for significant future achievements in the field of oral medicine. The award aims to support both clinical and basic science original research, highlighting scientific excellence.

Eligible candidates are authors under 30 years of age who are current members of the EAOM or AAOM who submitted original clinical or basic science research. Proof of the presenting author’s current EAOM/AAOM membership and their ID document to verify age must be provided along with the abstract submission. The top two selected abstracts will be awarded complimentary EAOM membership for the next year.

EAOM Oral Research Presentation Award
The Oral Research Presentation Award celebrates authors who present original basic science investigation research through oral presentation at the meeting. This award is granted to the top two selected abstracts and includes a monetary prize.

Eligible candidates must be current members of the EAOM or AAOM, have submitted an original basic science research abstract (eg. in vitro studies, animal model studies, genomics and proteomic studies) and been selected for oral presentation during the meeting. Proof of the presenting author’s current EAOM or AAOM membership must be provided along with the abstract submission.

Selection criteria include:

  • Academic significance: Clarity of research questions and hypothesis; Suitability of methodological design; Interpretation of results and conclusions.
  • Quality of presentation: Verbal communication skills; Knowledge of the subject; Visual effectiveness of the presentation; Response to questions.

EAOM Oral Clinical Presentation Award
The Oral Clinical Presentation Award honors authors presenting original clinical research through oral presentation at the meeting.
The award will be given to the top two selected abstracts and comes with a monetary prize.

Eligible candidates include current members of the EAOM or AAOM who submitted original clinical research (eg. case-control studies, cohort studies, randomized control studies, phase I, II, III, IV studies) and have been selected for oral presentation during the meeting. Proof of the presenting author’s current EAOM or AAOM membership must be provided along with the abstract submission.

Selection criteria include:

  • Academic significance: Clarity of research questions and hypothesis; Suitability of methodological design; Interpretation of results and conclusions.
  • Quality of presentation: Verbal communication skills; Knowledge of the subject; Visual effectiveness of the presentation; Response to questions.

EAOM Poster Award (Original Investigation)
The Poster Award will be given to the top three original investigation abstracts and is accompanied by a monetary prize.
All original investigation abstracts selected for poster presentation (not selected for oral presentation) from presenting authors are current EAOM or AAOM members are eligible for this award. Proof of the presenting author’s current EAOM or AAOM membership must be provided along with the abstract submission.

The top 10 original investigation abstracts selected for poster presentations at the meeting will be evaluated by distinguished scientist judges for selection of the three winning posters. The choice of the jury is based on scientific excellence and the scientific content of the poster as well as the delivery of the information by the presenting author.

Saudi Society for Oral Medicine Award

The Saudi Society for Oral Medicine Award recognizes outstanding contributions and excellence in the field of oral medicine and will be conferred to the best oral presentations of abstracts by non-trainees. Judging for this award will take place during the meeting, and the winners will be awarded a monetary prize.
